Temaikén, Tierra de Vida

Hace unos meses hicimos una nueva visita a Temaikén, no es la primera vez que vamos, es uno de nuestros lugares con animales favoritos donde se puede estar tranquilo, ir con amigos o familia, ideal para un fin de semana que no se sabe qué hacer, aunque conviene no ir en vacaciones (ni de invierno ni de verano ya que está llenísimo). El lugar es hermoso, no huele mal, da gusto ver a los animales a diferencia de otros zoológicos, pero siempre tengo un problema con Temaikén, todas las veces que he ido y en contra de las probabilidades, ¡todas las veces llueve antes de terminar el recorrido! Es una especie de maldición, supongo. Pero ya que teníamos entradas gratis (muy a menudo sacan descuentos, o entradas gratis) fuimos nuevamente, y de nuevo llovió casi al final del recorrido, lo cuál no impidió sacar fotos ni pasar un excelente domingo. Pero en serio, sólo vean, el día estaba primaveral y hermoso, y de la nada el cielo se cayó XD.

A few months ago we visited again Temaiken. It is one of our favorite places to see animals and go with friends, stay quiet and calm, ideal for a weekend that you don't know what to do. Even though, is not convinient go on vacations because is awfully full of people. The place is beautiful, doesn't smell bad, is nice to see their animals in contrast with other zoos, but there is one issue that happens to me all the time: everytime I visit them, rains before the day ends! But, as we had free tickets (they often have promos and discounts) we went again, and it rained again. That didn't stop us from taking pictures or have a good time, but seriously, look at those sunny spring-like photos, and suddenly the sky fell down.

El parque se encuentra ubicado en [Rta 25 Km 1, Belén de Escobar, Buenos Aires] a 60 km de Capital Federal, si no viajan en auto pueden llegar con el semirapido de la linea 60 Ramal Escobar. Antes que nada, Temaikén no es un zoológico cualquiera. Se trata de un BioParque, una institución que combina los objetivos de Jardines Botánicos, Zoológicos, Acuarios, Museos de Historia Natural y Antropología, y a diferencia de otros zoos y sus vagos intentos por "educar" al visitante, Temaikén lo logra. Prácticamente todo es didáctico, y tienen proyectos firmes sobre conservación y liberación de especies. La palabra "Temaikén" significa “tierra de vida”, frase del que se desprende el nombre de este sitio y que proviene de los vocablos tehuelches “tem” (tierra) y “aikén” (vida).

The park is in Escobar [RP 25 Km 1, Belén de Escobar, Buenos Aires], 38 miles away from the downtown. If you're not traveling in car, you could get there with the Bus Line 60 (Ramal Escobar - Semirápido).

Before anything else, let me clarify that Temaiken is not an ordinary zoo: It is a Biopark, an institution that combines a Botanical Garden, a Zoo, an Aquarium, Natural History and Antropology Museums, all joined together. And in contrast of other zoos (again) and their vagues attempts to educate the visitor, Temaiken actually does that. Practically the whole park is educational, and they have strong projects about conservation and liberation of the species. The word "Temaiken" means "land of life", phrase taken from the tehuelche's vocabulary: tem (earth/land) and aikén (life).

¿Qué recomendamos llevar?

Vestimenta y calzado cómodo porque van a caminar mucho, un bolso ligero, se puede llevar comida si no la exhibís mucho y no querés gastar, una buena cámara, gorra/sombrero porque no hay mucha sombra en el recorrido, Toallitas Higiénicas Anti Bacteriales (entiendan que hay animales por todas partes, incluso suerte, y no queremos que se sienten o apoyen comida cerca de sus heces accidentalmente, ¿no?), y el imprescindible paraguas, por favor. 

Temaikén tiene restaurantes, puestos de comida rápida, heladerías Munchi's, y mucho más. Los restaurantes en promedio no son caros ni muy destacados, si pueden evitarlos mejor. En cuanto a bebidas, si mal no recuerdo un vaso de 1000 ml. con tapa y temática del parque sale AR$ 30.00 . También hay botellitas chicas de distintas bebidas cobradas a precio de parque. En este recorrido queríamos comprobar si realmente se puede ir sin gastar nada de nada, y claro que se puede. La entrada normal para mayores es de AR$ 176.00, Menores AR$ 144.00 y como ya mencionamos, a menudo se realizan descuentos, pases gratis, 2x1, y demás con y sin estar adheridos a clubes o tarjetas.

What do we recommend you to take?

Comfortable clothes and shoes, because you are going to walk as hell. A light bag, where you can bring food (if not shown unnecessarily -I mean if you don't want to spend too much-), a good camera, hat of any kind because there is not too much shadow-shelters in the tour, antibacterial wipes (animals that freely walk around could dirt the seats and tables), and the essential umbrella, please. 

They have restaurants, fast food stands, ice cream shops and souvenirs stores. The restaurants are not too expensive but also not too remarkable, so if you can bring your food, better. About the drinks, a 1000 ml thematic coup is around USD 4.00; and then you have the usual bottles, park-priced. This time we went to see if we could really go without expending at all, and we confirm it! However, the following data is what you would probably use: adult ticket is aroun USD 20.00, minors USD 17.00, but as we mentioned, there is always discounts and promotions, like 2x1 or associated with brands. So check up the list in your services, credit cards, daily papers or else.

Es uno de los pocos parques en Argentina donde se pueden hacer visitas nocturnas, eventos corporativos y "Dormir con los Tiburones" (hacer un pijama party en el acuario). La propuesta es muy interesante para los amantes de los animales ya que permite apreciar comportamientos que no se pueden ver en el día, ya que muchos de los animales tienen su mayor horario de actividad al caer la noche.

Is one of the few parks in Argentina where you can make nocturnal tours, corporate events and "Sleeping with Sharks" (make a pijama party in the aquarium). The proposition is very interesting for the animal lovers because it allows to appreciate animal behaviors that are hard to see at day light (because of those animal nocturnal habits).  

El parque Temaikén tiene más de 34 hectáreas donde se recrean los tres grandes hábitats de la naturaleza: El Agua, La Tierra y El Aire, en los que se encuentran diversos ecosistemas con especies tanto autóctonas como exóticas de todas partes del mundo. Está conformado por tres grandes sectores: Africana, Asiática y Sudamericana con especies regionales. Y sin dudas, posee algunos de los ambientes mejor recreados por el hombre.

The park has more than 34 ha where are re-created the three great groups of habitats: Water, Earth and Air. There you can find the ecosystems with native and foreign species. It's formed with three great sectors: Africa, Asia and South America, with their  respective species. Is, without a doubt, one of the best re-created enviroments by the man.

El magnífico acuario comienza por el recorrido de la Poza de Marea que representa un ambiente del litoral marítimo que se inunda y escurre por acción de las mareas. Continúa por los acuarios de agua dulce que recrean ríos de la Mesopotamia y el Amazonas, y finaliza con el impresionante acuario marino. Uno de los datos de interés es que es el único acuario argentino abierto al público dónde se puede encontrar medusas en un entorno perfecto para apreciar su cruel y delicada belleza...

The beautiful aquarium begins with the tour of Poza de Marea, which represents the enviroment of the coastline that is flooded and sliped by the tide action. Continues with the freshwater aquarium that re-creates rivers from the Mesopotamia and the Amazonas, and ends with the incredible sea aquarium. One interesting fact is that this is the only public aquarium in Argentina where you could find jellyfishes in a perfect enviroment for its delicate and cruel beauty.

Hace unos años el parque se dividía más bien en dos, conocido vulgarmente como: La sección de las Aves y la Sección de los otros Animales (?) esta última sería la parte que relatamos, en nuestro último viaje la sección de las aves se hallaba mayormente en remodelación y la mayor parte de los recintos y especies construidos y reintegrados al parque en general (La sección de los Otros Animales...) lo cuál me parece mucho más cómodo para el visitante no tener el aviario separado del resto del recorrido. Un detalle más, ¡Hay casuarios! desconozco si son los únicos del país, pero seguramente lo sean... es practicamente como encontrarse con un dinosaurio en vida ver a una de estas aves gigantes y territoriales, capaces de matar a una persona de una patada.

Few years ago the park was divided in two: the birds and the "other animals" sections. This last sector is where we mostly were at, because the bird's one was under renovation. The idea, I supopse, is to connect both sector, and we didn't come back yet to see the result.

Another little detail: there are Cassowaries! I don't know if they are the only ones in the country, but they probably are... seeing them is like seeing a living dinosaur, as they are enormous, territorials and capable of killing people with a kick.

La zona de los psitácidos (loros) es una de las favoritas para los visitantes: los loros están sueltos, y pueden acercarse a los visitantes, no suelen tener miedo y lo hacen, pero no deben ser tocados porque pueden morder (son capaces de partir las nueces más duras del mundo, no lo olvidemos).

The psittacidae (parrots) area is one of the visitants favorites: the parrots are free to walk or fly around, get near to the people and so. They are not afraid of the people, and in fact they are not aloud to be touched because they actually can bite (let's not forget that they could easily break the most thoughest nuts in the world).

El recinto anfibio de los hipopótamos y los cocodrilos, estrellas en el lugar para los más jóvenes, donde se puede apreciar bajo el agua los movimientos elegantes de hipopótamos de más de 2 toneladas.

The amphibian enviroment for the hippos and crocodiles, ultimate stars of the youngers, is a place where can be appreciated the elegant movements of those gigantic creatures underwater.

Otros de los recintos sin igual, es el de los murciélagos, donde viven enormes colonias de algunas de las especies más grandes del mundo (Pteropus vampyrus y Pteropus lylei). Es de los pocos recintos que huele a algo, pero también se mantiene muy limpio.

Another unrivaled area is the Bat's, where live the large colonies of some of the biggest species in the world: Pteropus vampyrus y Pteropus lylei. Is one of the few places in the park that actually smells, but also they take a good care of it all the time.

En resumen, si te gustan los animales, especialmente los peces y las aves, el lugar te resultará de ensueño. Si lo que buscas es ver animales grandes en cantidad Temaikén no los tiene, no es su finalidad tener uno de cada uno como en el resto de los zoos ocurre... La idea del parque es lograr un equilibrio y ambientes lo más similares a los reales posible, los animales lucen muy cómodos y vivaces, a la mayoría les gusta interactuar con el visitante y no es por alimento... Los que fuimos muchas veces nos damos cuenta que muchos de los animales están desde que se creó el parque, además que siempre han mantenido las mismas ansias por mejorar y mantener entretenidos a los visitantes de nuevas formas, la higiene del lugar es ejemplar y el recorrido es único. Es algo que se tiene que hacer si estas o sos de Argentina. Es ideal para paseos de jubilados y escolares, o simplemente sacar hermosas fotos. 

Concluding: if you like animals, especially birds and fishes, this place is going to be heaven for you. If what you are looking for are lots of large animals, they don't have them in Temaiken, is not their goal to have each and every one of them as other zoos. The purpose of the park is to re-create the nature as real as possible, where the animals can be comfortable and lively, and where they could interact with visitors not only for food. Those, as myself, who often went to the park can notice that some of the animals are since its creation. Also, there they want to keep improving and keep creating new ways to entertain, not forgetting the animals needs. Is healthy and clean, and the tour is unique. Is something to do if you are from or in Argentina, to go with a specific tour or just to hang out and take pretty pictures.
